Year 5

Hello and welcome to the Year 5 Blog!

Mrs Preece - Year 5 Class Teacher and Junior Phase Manager

Hi everyone, the classroom is very quiet without you and I miss you all lots. It has been lovely keeping in touch with you all and I am really proud of how hard you are working and I am especially proud of how kind and helpful you are all being - keep up the great work.

Thank you for sending in such lovely photo updates. I love seeing them and your friends do too. Keep them coming!

18th - 22nd May

At some point over the next two weeks, I have asked you to have a go at a science investigation - creating a rainbow using water, kitchen roll and felt tips. Holly has already had a go at it and her results are fantastic! Well done Holly.

......................

Edward has been busy in the garden. He dug and edged this patch ready to plant the seedlings that his sister, Charlotte grew. Great work Edward!

......................

11th - 15th May

This week, star of the week was awarded to Morgan. Morgan was star of the week for the fantastic lava lamp that he created. Well done Morgan!

...................

Wow look at this utterly brilliant longboat that Oli S has created! I love the detail in it. Year 5, I am so impressed with how creative you have been. I love seeing what you come up with.

.......................

Joseph R found a very fun way to make a rainbow - look at all those cuddly friends! Josesph made his Viking longboat using clay.

...................

Ben used cardboard and straws to make his Viking longboat. I love it Ben - well done!

.......................

It is lovely to see lots of you still thinking about our values whilst you are at home.

Sophie and Archie did some great values work; they thought about kindness and peace.

.....................

This really made me smile. Holly has made the most fantastic longboat. What amazing detail Holly and I love your use of Lego people to row your boat!

............................

I was very impressed with this newspaper report sent in by Joseph L. The layout and content are both fantastic. I bet Colonel Tom would love to read this.

Joseph also (with his Mum close by ensuring he was safe) wrote a message to key workers outside his house - what a lovely thought Joseph.

......................

Whilst Mrs Preece was out on a walk this week she spotted this rainbow. Lots of you have been drawing rainbows but have any of you spotted one, or even better, managed to snap a photo of one? I'd love to see if you have!

.....................

Another fantastic Viking longboat, this time from Ronon. I love the brightly coloured sail you have made Ronon and straws as oars are perfect!

.........................

Charlie D has completed some more beautifully presented work this week and has been getting stuck into the Science work all about materials and their properties.

As part of our new history topic, Charlie made this fabulous Viking longboat!

.....................

Sophie and Archie have been very busy. As well as completing some work in their learning packs they have been spending lots of time in the garden. They have made an amazing bird watching look out - can you spot Sophie? They also made some chocolate apples together and Sophie made this fantastic Lego rainbow. Great work Sophie and Archie!

..................

Star of the week goes to Charlie D who has been working so hard on his home-learning pack. I have been really impressed with the high standard of his work. Well done Charlie!

Here is Charlie with his certificate:

.................................

Charlie D has been busy creating this work all about Colonel Tom Moore! It looks great Charlie - well done!

..................................

4th-8th May

Holly continues to work hard and has sent me lovely photos showing a selection of her work.

.......................

What a fantastic write-up Ben has done all about Colonel Tom. I love it Ben and I am really impressed with the different features you have included: pictures, captions, quotes, a heading etc.

............................

How many of you have been out on a bike or a scooter ride? Erin has and it looks like it was beautiful weather for cycling!

..................................

Morgan has been out and about today and has discovered that along a public footpath, close to his house, there is this fantastic waterfall. Thanks for sharing Morgan, I live close by and can't wait to try and find it. It looks amazing! I will let you know if I find it.

.....................................

Home learning pack 'Rainbow Challenge'

I challenged the Year 5 pupils to make a rainbow in the most creative way they could. I will add the results below as I receive them. Charlie used DVDs, Poppy used paint tubes and Joseph L used fruit and bottle tops - what creative ideas! Ben painted leaves and tested his patience with elastic bands, whilst Erin made a delicious rainbow fruit platter!

.......................................

I was so impressed with the content and quality of the work that Charlie D sent in today. It makes me to proud to see you continuing to be the best you can be whilst you are learning out of the classroom -  keep up the great work!

Star of the week last week was awarded to Ben. I have been so impressed with bens commitment to his home-learning. Each time I have spoken to Ben he is able to tell me what work he has been doing and what he has been learning about. It's not always easy to stay focussed at home but Ben is doing an excellent job! Well done Ben!

...........................

27th April - 1st May

Another really creative idea for making a rainforest animal - this one is Charlotte's!

.......................

Charlie D's funny verse poem was such a joy to read - it made me laugh very much Charlie! i hope we can share our verses with each other soon. Perhaps we could put them together to form a whole class poem!

Charlie's third verse is below:

If bees sneezed

and crocodiles wore a smile

if chairs could walk

and otters knew how to tile.

.......................

Oli has been making great progress with his maths. It is great to see how hard you all continue to work on your problem solving skills - I've seen some great resilience!

...................

Joseph has enjoyed the work in the home learning-packs linked to the rainforest. His whole family got involved with the animal making! I have loved seeing all of your old fashioned letters - Joseph's is another example of how hard you have worked on them.

...........................

Toby is making the most of some extra time at home and has been helping his Dad build an autograss racing car. He is hoping to start competing soon. How exciting!

.....................

A lovely update from Edward. Like Ronon, he has been busy making rainforest creatures. He came up with some very creative ways of making them. The snake looks very edible! Edward has also been busy writing his reading inspired letter.

..........................

Morgan has enjoyed some science with his Mum and brothers today. Do you remember when we had lots of fun making lava lamps with food colouring and oil? Well Morgan made his very own today in a jam jar. What a great idea Morgan - I am sure lots of your friends will want to make one now. Thanks for sharing!

........................

As part of your home learning pack you were challenged to create a rainforest animal. Look how fantastic Ronon's is; he made a jaguar! I wonder if you could tell your family at home which layer of the rainforest a jaguar lives in?

.......................

Charlotte has been busy baking too! What a great result Charlotte - well done.

..............................

Toby has been very busy working and relaxing. Look at these wonderful cakes he has made! Great measuring work Toby.

.................................

Thank you so much for the amazing video clips you have sent in for our Y4/5 fitness challenge. Mr Eckley and I have been so impressed. If you haven't sent a clip in yet but you'd like to be part of our challenge, I have extended the deadline to the end of the day on Wednesday 29th April. We can't wait for you to see the video, but until then, here's a sneak peek...

.........................

What an awesome hide-out Oli has made with his family! I hope it's water-tight with the weather we are having today!

...................................

I was seriously impressed with the photos that Holly sent to me this morning. Linked to our topic of 'The Rainforest,' Holly has made the most amazing snake model. I can't wait to find out how she made it!

............................

Sophie and Archie have been having a lovely time in the garden with their family, they even set the tent up. Aren't they lucky to have a pond to explore? You'll have to let us know if you catch any fish.

.....................................

I was blown away by this football kit that Ben designed. It was a challenge in the home learning pack and Ben chose to design it to show respect to our NHS staff. keep it safe, I would love to put it on display in school once we are back. It is FANTASTIC Ben! Well done.

.....................................

It was great to see that Ronon is still enjoying his maths - he created a squares challenge similar to the one in your home learning packs. I wonder if you can work out how many squares there are?

....................................

Joseph managed to complete the fish challenge from the maths in his home-learning pack and has done lots of other maths challenges.

.....................................

I love this acrostic poem that Charlie B has written, linked to our school value of honesty.

Honesty is a gift you must keep,

                                                     Only tell the truth,

                                                             Never lie,

Even when you are feeling down,

                                                          Simply believe,

                                                      Truth is all we need,

                                                   Yet we are all innocent.

                                                    ..........................................

Star of the week this week in Year 5 was Charlie B. Charlie's letter writing impressed me hugely. It's content and presentation were both beautiful. You can see Charlie's letter in a bottle just a little further down the page.

A big WELL DONE Charlie from Mrs Preece and all of Year 5!

.............................

Ben has been a busy bee! It's lovely to see that, as well as completing lots of work, he is finding time to enjoy some sunshine and fresh air with his very cute dog! Well done Ben.

I've spotted that Ben's pencil case looks a little bit like Gordon...

...............................................

It was lovely to hear what Ollie has been up to. He's been busy working through his home learning pack as well as doing some baking and enjoying the sunshine.

...............................................

Yet more lovely feedback on the letters you wrote to the care home residents. Have you written and sent a letter to anyone else since being at home?

..............................................

Last week it was Oli's 10th birthday! I know you love opening the class birthday cards to see who designed yours. Because we are not in school at the moment, I opened one for Oli and emailed it to him so he didn't miss out. Does anyone recognise the maker of this card? Let me know.

Happy 10th Birthday Oli, from Mrs Preece and all of your friends!

.................................................

It was so lovely to hear how Tyler has been getting on. He went on a family walk in a woodland and has been enjoying some reading too!

..................................................

I am so excited to see where this takes him. Joseph (along with his brother) has spent the Easter holidays preparing a puppet show from scratch! He has written the storyline, created the characters and is now busy making their costumes. I have heard there is a performance or two lined up to mark a special celebration but I won't spill the beans!

Joseph this is so fantastic and I can't wait to see how it all goes.

...................................................

This piece of work really brightened up my day! Charlie has completed one of her home learning tasks to an exceptionally high standard. You should be really proud of yourself Charlie. I can't wait to see it properly when we are back together again.

...........................................

We have been so so lucky that the weather has been as kind as it has. The countryside that we are lucky to live in is looking so beautiful. When I went on a walk yesterday I noticed so many signs of Spring. What signs of Spring have you spotted whilst out and about?

.................................................

Another fantastic piece of home-learning was recently sent my way. Erin chose to base her home learning research project on dolphins. She organised her research into a really neat fact-file. Great work Erin! Which animal did you choose to research for yours?

.......................................

Look what Joseph R found whilst out on a family bike ride today! Do you know why this is so special and what it symbolises?

..................................................

HAPPY EASTER YEAR 5!

I am still missing you all lots and hope you are all staying safe and well. I hope you have found some time to enjoy the sunshine. Have a wonderful Easter!

From Mrs Preece

................................................

Joseph has been keeping busy and active! How have you all been spending you time? Have you done any Easter based activities? If you have I'd love to see them!

.................................................

Wow - How fantastic is this path that Libby created? I am sure this has brightened the day of everyone that has walked by!

.................................................

Edward has been very busy. He too made an amazing cake as part of the maths challenge. He has done some lovely writing linked to our rainforest topic as well. It makes me so happy to see you all keeping up your beautiful presentation and high standards - well done. I was very impressed that with some grown-up help, Edward has tried his hand at some welding!

.................................................

Another day, another example of how kind and helpful you all are in Year 5! As well as work from his home-learning book, Joseph has been busy cutting the grass, plastering and doing some maintenance on his bikes. Keep up the great work Joseph!

..................................................

Whilst having a tidy up in the garden today, Mrs Preece found some very small and cute baby animals. They had made their home in a bag of sand and looked very cosy. Who can guess what they are? There were more than 10 of them in total! We left them cosy and safe and will eagerly watch them grow in the coming weeks we hope. They are so young that their eyes aren't even open yet. If you think you know what they are perhaps you could let me know...

....................................................................

You all brighten up my day every day in school so it's no surprise to see you all being lovely outside of school, in the community, too and doing your best to make people smile. I love this poster that Charie has put in her window. I wonder how many people have seen this and smiled - lots I'm sure. Thank you Charlie.

......................................................

So many of you have been busy completing your baking maths challenge and the results are amazing. These pictures are from Charlie D, Poppy, Maddie and Joseph. Great work, it looks like you all measured accurately!

.....................................................

Poppy had some unexpected visitors in her garden this week, two ducks! She has named them Geoff and Barbara. I wonder how long they will stay?

......................................................................................

As one of their maths challenges, Year 5 were challenged to use their measuring skills to do some baking. Erin chose to make some lovely cupcakes with a little help from her little brother. I bet they tasted great - well done Erin!

 ......................................................................................

It looks like Oli has been fitting lots into his time at home, writing, maths, painting and some time letting off steam on his bike in the garden! I've noticed that Oli's TTR time has improved already this week - great work Oli.

.......................................................

I was so proud of you all today when this email arrived. Lots of you wrote some lovely letters on our last day together which we posted to different care homes. The recipients have all loved your letters and art work and were all very grateful. I have popped a copy of the email I received below. You should all feel very proud of how happy you have made these people who are probably feeling a little lonely at the moment whilst they can't have visitors.

......................................................................................

Libby made such an amazing den last week. It's lovely that she has got all her fluffy friends in there with her! I think I may have to make myself one. Have you got yourself into the Easter spirit yet? As well as her maths and English work, Libby has also been doing some Easter inspired art work.

..................................... ..............................

Thanks so much to Ben for sending me this fabulous fact-file all about spaniels. Does anyone you know have a spaniel? If you have completed your animal fact-file already, I wonder what animal you chose?!

....................................................................................

I know how much you all love art - me too, so it made me really happy to see this giraffe that Joseph has drawn! Isn't it great!

....................................................................

Charlie has been keeping fit and healthy and has been making the most of the good weather too! How many kick-ups can you all manage? Let's see who can get the highest!

......................................................................................

I have been on a lovely walk each day and have loved seeing the lambs out and about in the fields! The sun has been lovely too! 🌞 I took this photo whilst out on a walk. How have you been getting your daily exercise?

................................................................................

The weather on the weekend was lovely so I decided to do some extreme gardening. Luckily there aren't too many unintentional holes in the garden from my digging!

......................................................................................

Be sure to check back here regularly to see what all of your friends have been up to!
