Year 1 Page!
A warm welcome to our Year 1 Class Page!
In Year 1 there are 19 wonderful children who are taught by Miss Gillespie (class teacher) and we are lucky enough to be supported by Mrs Thomson (teaching assistant). We are an extremely inquisitive, enthusiastic and lively bunch who enjoy a practical challenge.
Our Big Questions
This half term, our two big questions are: 'Which birds and plants would Little Red Riding Hood find in Kingstone?’ and ‘Where do the wheels on the bus go?’. Both of our big questions are excellent for the summer term because hopefully we can answer these questions whilst enjoying our summer weather and exploring our wonderful city! We will be looking at different places in the United Kingdom and methods of transport and how these have changed over time. We will also be learning about our local environment, focusing on the birds and plants we see and what it is they need to survive. Please take a look at our topic overview for more cross curricular links to our big questions. Also there is an optional topic homework at the bottom of this page.
Our reading dairies should be in school every day so they can be checked by Miss Gillespie or Mrs Thomson, so please feel free to add any comments or concerns. It is important that children are listened to on a daily basis, comments from the listener should be recorded in your child’s diary. We encourage children to read by themselves if they are unable to read to an adult, every little bit helps!
This term children will continue to do P.E outdoors on Thursday afternoons, we will be focusing on athletics this half term, getting ourselves ready for the main event – sports day! So please could you send your child to school with a full P.E kit each week. Please can I remind you that children should wear black shorts/joggers, pumps and a white t-shirt preferably with the school logo on it.
Year 1 will be very pleased to know they will be doing forest school this half term. This will take place on Mondays. Children may come into school in their forest school clothes ready to begin after break. Beware they are likely to get a little muddy! In forest school children will be putting all the things we are learning into action, such as creating and using maps, birdwatching, making bird tables/feeders, mini-beast bug hotels and much more!
We set homework on Education City weekly (on Fridays), children have an updated login on the inside of their reading diaries. Children now have their logins to Times Table Rockstars which they are very excited about. Can I just remind you that Year 1 should be clicking on 'Garage Mode' to ensure they are on the right level of times tables. Please let me know if you are having any problems getting on. There is also an optional homework linked to our topics, it would be great to see you all having a go at home and bringing things in to share with your peers.
We will keep you updated on what we get up to in Year 1; because we are a bunch of smarties, so keep checking our page!
