THE GOVERNING BODY OF
KINGSTONE & PRIMARY SCHOOL 2009
The Governing Body plays an important strategic role in the life of the School and is responsible for determining the aims and overall conduct of the School. By working together with the head teacher and senior leadership team it sets and reviews policies, strategies and procedures to ensure the best possible education for present and future children and has responsibility for the financial control of the School.
The Governors give their time voluntarily, receiving no payment and for continuity are generally expected to serve at least 4 years on the governing body. They offer a blend of skills and experience to help guide and direct the School. Governors are selected from a variety of backgrounds and fall into five main categories below.
· Staff Governors (Elected by school staff)
· Community Governors (Members of the local community appointed by the governing body)
· Local Authority Governors (Appointed by the local authority)
· Parent Governors (Elected by parents)
· Associate Governors (Appointed by the governing body)
The Governors have responsibility for key areas and are divided into smaller executive Sub-committees covering the following key areas; Finance & Personnel, Outcomes (i.e standards, pupil achievement etc) and Buildings and Health & Safety.
The roles and responsibilities of the Governing Body were best described by DfES in 2004 and are reproduced below.
To help schools to provide the best possible education for their pupils by:
— Setting the school’s values, vision and strategic aims, agreeing plans and policies, and making creative use of resources
— Monitoring and evaluating performance, acting as a critical friend to the head teacher and senior leadership team to support and challenge them in managing the school
— Ensuring that the school is accountable to the children and parents it serves, to its local community, to those who fund and maintain it, as well as to the staff it employs
