Curriculum

Kingstone & Thruxton Primary School prides itself on a rich and creative curriculum, providing all the statutory elements and much more in an imaginative and flexible way, responding to the children’s interests and individual needs.

In the early years we have a clear focus on all the areas of work in the foundation stage profile, aiming to help the children develop a love of learning, independence and good social skills as well as a solid foundation in key skills they will need later on. The early years curriculum is based on the following areas:

  • personal, social and emotional development
  • communication, language and literacy
  • mathematical development
  • knowledge and understanding of the world
  • physical development
  • creative development

As children progress through the school, the curriculum is designed to build on and develop their skills, maintain a love of learning and aspire to achieve high standards as they move on to high school and beyond. We keep a close eye on the children’s progress particularly in maths, English and science and provide intensive support and catch-up programmes where needed, for example:

  • individual and group support led by experienced and highly skilled support workers
  • daily phonics catch-up lessons
  • individual education plans for all children that need them, with high numbers of Teaching assistants providing 1:1 and small groups support and a highly qualified special needs teacher providing booster group lessons

Maths, English and science lessons follow the principles and guidance of the renewed primary framework and are delivered in fun and creative ways with an emphasis on high standards and challenge. All other areas of the curriculum are delivered through broad-based topics, which allow room for children to think for themselves, generate their own questions and pursue their own interests.
